MOVING TIME LINE
8 – 10 Weeks Prior to Your Move
- Go through closets and storage areas and give or throw away things you can no longer use.
- Begin contacting moving companies for estimates.
- This is a good time to start using up perishable items in your freezer and canned goods you don’t want to have to pay to move.
6 Weeks Prior to Your Move
- Gather moving supplies – Boxes, packing tape, labels, markers
- Begin packing things you won’t need until after your move –
Out of season clothing,
Items in Attic, Basement, Garage or Off-Site Storage Facility
Extra pots, pans and dishes
- Have a garage or yard sale with items you no longer want but still have some life left in them.
- Make a list of movers from whom you wish to get estimates.
- Check with your condo or co-op office to find out about moving restrictions that will have to be coordinated with your mover.
4 Weeks Prior to Your Move
- Contact your list of movers for written estimates.
- Do your background checks of movers with best estimates.
- Arrange to have your child’s school records moved to the new school if necessary.
3 Weeks Prior to Your Move
- Register your change of address with your local post office.
- Contact the following with your new address:
- Credit card companies
- Banks
- Insurance Companies (Auto/Health/Homeowners)
- Doctor/Dentist/Veterinarian – Ask for referrals and have records forwarded if you are moving out of your immediate area.
- Friends and relatives
2 Weeks Prior to Your Move
- Arrange to change your service address with
- Utility company
- Phone company
- Cable provider
- Newspapers and Periodicals
1 Week – Moving Day
- Clean out your appliances.
- Prepare an “Open Me First” box with items you’ll need the first night in your new place.
- Soap, toothpaste, washcloths/towels, bottled water, soda, coffee maker/coffee/creamer/sugar, snacks, paper cups and plates. Be sure you have special items on hand for small children and pets.
- If you are moving any distance away, consider items you will need in the car for small children and pets and have them prepared.
- Don’t forget to clear out any safety deposit boxes you may have.
- If you are traveling a long distance you may want to convert your cash into traveler’s checks or, be sure to carry an ATM card for cash needs.
- Contact your alarm company to discontinue service. If the new owner of your home will continue with the alarm company, be sure to give him the code.
- Leave warranties and owner’s manuals for items you are leaving behind where the new owner can find them. You may want to make a list of local tradesmen like dry-cleaners, restaurants that deliver (and a few menus), landscapers, etc. to help them get settled. You will also want to be sure the garage door openers and perhaps an extra set of keys is left where they can find them.
