QUICK CHECKLIST FOR SHOWING YOUR HOUSE

Within 15 seconds of first seeing your home, a buyer has formed an opinion of your property!

It’s always a good idea to hire a cleaning service to come into your home and do a thorough cleaning before showing your house. Any extra pieces of furniture that make your rooms look cluttered should be put in storage. If possible, arrange to be out of the house when it is shown.

Outside

• Make sure the lawn is mowed, edged and, if possible, watered just before showing.
• All gardening equipment and toys should be put away.
• Have planters of flowers or other seasonal greenery near the entrance.
• A seasonal wreath on the front door is always a nice touch.

Inside

• Keep your pets at a neighbor’s house until the showing is over. Do not close them off in a room you can’t show.
• Check for any unpleasant odors.
• Scented candles in apple pie or cookie fragrances can give a homey aroma to the house.
• Keep valuables locked up. Even when professionals are showing your home it’s difficult to keep an eye on everyone.
• Open your curtains and let the sunlight in.
• Turn on lights in darker rooms.
• Add some bright throw pillows to liven up a room.
• Silk or fresh flowers in a vase look great in any room, especially in the center of your dining room table.
• Put new towels and guest soaps in each bathroom.
• If you have a fireplace, light it. If the weather is too warm for a fire, decorate the hearth with a basket of flowers or candle arrangement.
• Put away anything that makes kitchen or bathroom counters look cluttered such as small appliances or personal items.
• Wash hand prints from doorways and light switch plate covers.
